 Trip review

4th year in a row staying at this resort and probably our last. The food situation, while at best is mediocre has gone quite downhill this year. My wife and I ended up paying for a taxi into town for dinners. But by far, lunch was the worst. They also kept running out of clean plates which made long lineups just waiting for a plate!

 PLAYA CALETA

the food at the buffet is much improved since a year ago. the entertainment show in the evening has improved. the elevators dont work half the time. the beds are thin and need to be replaced. there are a limited amount of king or queen beds so got stuck with a double even though i booked a month prior. the a la carte restaurants suck big time. the maid did a great job. the staff over all did a great job. good for the price but dont expect a five star when it is a three and a half star cuban standards.

 Varadero

 Playa Caleta Review

This was our second time and while the rooms, beach was great, the food had gone downhill. Maid service was not as good as last year. Had to request additional room towels twice, only one left for two people.

 O.K but once is enough

We had a few issues while we were there. The hotel could use an alround inspection. One of the emergency exits was blocked off completely. The outside staircases are not lit at night...and when the elevators were not working that was your way up & down. The patio doors did not lock and we asked for someone to come and open our safe because all our stuff was locked in there. They made us wait two hours got it open but we had no safe for the rest of the trip. It took two days before we got clean towels and we only had two hand towels to begin with. We were told the washing machines were broken.

Our First Family Vacation to Cuba

Overall our family had a good stay at Playa Caleta.

Room - The room was a decent size and clean. Maid service everyday. It's definitely worth the price for the ocean view room. Stunning views. Beds and pillows are not comfortable at all. Walls are thin so if you have loud neighbors you will hear everything, luckily we didn't.

Food - I found the food somewhat repetitive at the buffet but not too bad. Bring your own ketchup and syrup though. The 2 A La Carte restaurants are worth going too but make sure you book them when you check in as they fill fast. My daughter loved the snack bar at the pool as they have burgers and fries.

Pool and Beach - Pool is cold but refreshing. Closes at 6pm everyday for cleaning. Swim up bar is not open. They will however serve you from the other side. The beach had some garbage on it but still absolutely stunning.

Tours - highly suggest the catamaran and jeep tour. We met some people that went to Havana with a private taxi (staff at resort had a friend who took them). Apparenty it's a lot cheaper and you will get a better tour which isn't rushed. We went into Varadaro to check out the markets. Great stuff and make sure you don't pay full price for souvenirs. You will get hassled alot but overall the people are very friendly. We brought candy and toiletries to give to folks in town.

Overall I would say we had a good stay. If we do go back I will however pay more for a higher star resort.

 Good Value

Although it is listed as 3.5 stars hotel, it is a budget 2 stars hotel in N.A. standard. It is clean but room, bed and facilities is budget. Large public area and restaurant/bar for the numbers of guests that was there during the week I was there. Food is fine but basic. Other than flies in the buffet restaurant, no other insects in January. Short walk to the nice private beach behind the Hotel, clean, quiet and enought chairs. Limited free activities. Hotel pool is clean and large area. Better than expected daily evening entertainments and shows, but no DJ/Club. Other guest are mostly Canadian and less European than expected. May be due to the economy.

 A dissapointment

The beach in Varadero is nice so if that's all you need this is place is fine. The food is what you expect from Cuba but they have a tendancy to put out only small amounts of anything worth eating so we lost weight while there. The room was basic but clean and the maid was definitely a highlight. She was the friendliest employee we met and did a good job every day.

I don't have much else good to say about this place. The front desk staff were unfriendly and unhelpful. There were little/no activities staff for most of the week. The waiters were more interested in selling cigars than their jobs and were ignoring us for the most part by the 4th day because we wouldn't buy any from them so we often got our own drinks (although sometimes they would come over and tell me I couldn't pour beers for myself and take over).

This was probably just luck of the draw but the hotel was filled with 100 drunk teens/20-22 year olds from Quebec who acted like assholes the whole week. I'm all for having fun but these kids acted like they had never drank before and were generally beligerant and a sloppy mess at all times of the day.

 Excellent voyage

 As Expected,

The hotel was fine. We were disappointed with itravel and the ocean view room policy, because it was not explained to us at the beginning, so when we arrived we did not have an ocean view room, but that was remedied on the 2nd day. The rooms were clean, the staff were friendly and went above and beyond as needed. We stayed in a 4 star in Cayo Santa Maria, 2 years ago, so were a little disappointed at first, but everything was fine and the weather was fantastic. We came back with fabulous tans, refreshed and rejuvenated.

 3.5 stars? more like 2.

i expected a lot from a 3.5 star hotel. now i learned the hard way that rating in cuba is different. so basically if you are going to a 3.5 in reality is 2 stars or less. the location was close to the airport but a bit far from the other hotels and night clubs. the food was good, i am a vegetarian and had lots of choices. our maid was very nice. i wish there was night entertainment in the hotel besides the nightly shows, such as music for dancing. the tub in our room was old and gross, i had to shower in flop flops every time. i recommend spending more money and staying at a 5 star hotel.

Playa Caleta Hotel Varadero DEC 2011

Nice and clean room, nice view, nice and quiet beach, nice gardens, good front desk personnel but kill the cockroachs and organize better the buffet(clean ,garbage, dirty dishes, food presentation).Don Dionisio restaurant with Katia and Juan Carlos (could be used as teachers for the others)it is of 4 stars, but the buffet is max.1 and 1/2.The wine is warm.

 Bargain price not worth it

I have been to Cuba many times, and to different parts and this resort was definitely not worth the bargain price. The positives included beautiful water(but that can be found in most places in Cuba) and the helpful sunwing representatives.
Negatives: The maid refused to give us clean beach towels when we asked directly, we put them on the floor and she put them(while they were still wet) on our beds in a design. The food was the worst I've ever had in Cuba. They didn't cook anything properly(hamburgers, calamari and even pasta were all undercooked). There was not enough equipment on the beach for the amount of people(never had snorkelling gear, only 3 single person kayaks etc). It is also located pretty far from central varadero. We needed to take a 13CAN$ taxi one way to get in there at night, or take a bus during the day.
Overall I am sure that I will not be returning to this hotel and perhaps not even to varadero. I find holguin and Cayo coco to bebetter destinations for similar prices.

A' Class people, but Buffet is NOT GOOD CUBAN food

If the Hotel management could read this, please accept that your buffet is the biggest challenge for Canadian visitors. I would like to help. Your a' la' cart resturants are not proportionate to the capacity of requests, asking for a dinner outside of these "todays specials" buffets.

THERE Is No DISCO, so all dancing is a 10 peso' one way minimum by taxi, to your club of choice, before the cover charge. In my opinion, this is your vacation, so live!

Performances by the night shows are captivating. The talent of these young people are the greatest asset in Cuban tourism. They have singers, a live band, dancers and teachers that draw the "awwwwwwws" out of crowds everytime.

TIP; In my opinion, those hotel staff that are not in a position to recieve tips, could use it most. Meaning People who clean the main lobbies, singers, teachers and dancers.

On a bien apprécie!

Bon voyage!

We loved that everything was located in one building, the hotel was not small but it was nice to be able to quickly take an elevator up to your room instead of having to walk forever to get to your room. The staff was exeptional and the hotel was casual and clean.

 Belles Vacances

Ambiance super.
