 Great Value for Money

This resort is located right in the town of Ocho Rios within walking distance of their town shops and is about 1.5 hrs from the airport in Montego Bay. This is a great resort but has room for improvement. There are not enough lounges around the pool or on the beach. People put their towels on the lounges starting about 5 am and by 8 am there are none left. Many times these chairs with towels on them are not used till mid afternoon. The resort needs to have a policy of no reserving, first come- first serve OR buy more lounge chairs though the beach area is small for putting a lot more lounges. Because the beach area is small you are never very far from it. It is a good length but is only about 3 lounge chairs deep. Also you should be able to make all your a-la-carte restaurant reservations at one time instead of lining up EVERY day to make your dinner reservation for the following evening. The food was great, always plenty of it, the staff were excellent, never felt concerned about items being stolen. We stayed in the older section (North Tower) but it was clean and adequate. Balcony doors were stiff to open (needs bearings replaced), bathrooms don't have exhaust fans and ours did not have a plug for either tub or sink, always had plenty of hot water and temperature stayed steady during showers. If you are taking items to give to staff, be sure to write a note and sign it with room number giving permission for that staff person to take it home. From my balcony I could see staff leaving at end of day and they were searched and gone over with a probe so I asked our housekeeper if they can take gift items home. She said only if they have a note from the giver giving them permission. I don't know where it goes but the staff cannot take it unless they have the necessary note from the giver. Wages are low- tips mean sooo much to them. Minimum wage which is what most get is 5000 Jamaican dollars per WEEK which amount to less than $60 Canadian or American. They work 48 hrs per week. Start giving small tips early in the week to ensure good service. Give extra at end if you want to. Internet access was available in the business centre from 8 am - 8 pm $5 Am for 1 hour which is all I used all week. If you have your own computer you can just sit in lobby and use it. I'm not sure if that is free or not. Prices in gift shop were comparable with what you would pay out in the village- maybe a wee bit more but so worth it not to get the hassle of the village merchants pulling you into their store. At the beach area they have big rings (about 6 feet diameter) that float, you sit on them and float around. They stay balanced no matter how many are on it or the differences in the weights of the occupants. They were fun. Go with an open mind, remember this is not Canada or the USA. If you are looking for the same as in Can or USA, stay home. Excursions are offered right at the resort - take atleast one that will get you out into the country so you can see how the locals live. There are photographers right there on the resort taking pictures all week. At the end of your week you can go to the photo hut and see if you want to buy any photos of you. We didn't so I don't know how much they cost. The water is safe to drink right from your tap and the language is English - both things I found really helpful. I would recommend taking your own insulated mug for drinks from the bars, but not necessary. They take a credit card number from you for your beach towels and hotel safe lock but there is no charge if you return both by check out time. No need to pay extra for ocean-view as I believe ALL rooms have a view of the ocean the way the buildings are situated. The Cabanas are nice, they are very close to the beach area. They are kinda like row housing, a 2 floor building each with a balcony/patio and are very near a quiet pool area. If I was going back I would probably pay a little extra for a cabana unit but if money was tight I would be just as happy with just a room.

 Recommended for couples/families... not singles

Written from the perspective of a 31 y.o. single Canadian woman travelling with four adult friends looking to party and have a good time. When reading my review, keep in mind that I’ve travelled all over the world (i.e., backpacking) but this was my first experience at an all-inclusive resort and, based on my experience, I don’t think I will be doing all-inclusive trips again anytime soon. I found myself going off-resort everyday to escape the hordes of Canadian tourists (mostly elderly couples and families). I am the type of traveler who likes to mingle with locals, experience the local culture, and take in the natural beauty. I found that staying at an all-inclusive resort (this one or any other I would assume) did not provide any of those experiences. The only locals we encountered were the resort staff and overly aggressive street vendors and hustlers off-resort and, though there were nice landscapes visible from the resort, it was too noisy and crowded to really enjoy it.

1. Staff: The staff was very friendly and helpful but if you want good bar service you have to keep tipping.

2. Food: The buffet was actually pretty good; always a stocked salad bar and at least 4-6 hot meal options. I found the Jamaican food on resort was not so good but luckily we were in town so it was easy to grab cheap ($3) roti, patties, and curries in town to change things up. In between buffet hours, there was a grill that sold burgers, grilled cheese sandwiches, and hot dogs. So if you get hungry in between meals and up to 2AM you could grab those. It was all pretty good except the hot dogs, the wieners were disgusting. The à la carte restaurants were just okay; not a big improvement over the buffet which was already pretty good. We had a 9PM seating at the La Diva Italian restaurant and it feels like they served us leftovers... it wasn't good. Go earlier if you can. Ask for a table on the terrace. The Caribbean South Beach restaurant on the other hand was quite good and right on the beach! I had snapper in a coconut milk sauce that was amazing. We also tried the Ginger Lily Chinese restaurant which was decent but indoors with too much A/C.

3. Booze: The liquor on the resort wasn't that great... I found it hard on my stomach and was downing Pepto Bismol like crazy. After day 4, we had to go out and buy ‘real’ liquor. Being in town meant that we could buy bottles of Appleton Reserve, Grey Goose vodka and other top-shelf booze (they even sold Crown Royal!) at good prices (under $20) at the supermarket. Don’t buy liquor in souvenir shops, you’ll get ripped off.

4. Night life: My biggest disappointment was the fact that there was virtually no nightlife to speak of. The only action past 11PM was at the Jamaic'n Me Crazy disco where the handful of obnoxious 20 year olds travelling with their parents hung out. There was also the option of going with other resort-goers to Margarita Ville but who wants to go to Jamaica to hang out with a bunch of other tourists? I don’t. I was hoping to go to a real reggae club but it’s not very safe to go in town after dark without a local… Even with a local it can get quite sketchy…

5. Beaches: On cruise ship days (there were cruise ships docked in the marina 3 of the 7 days we were there) the beaches on the resort were over-crowded and the line-ups at the bar were ridiculous. The beaches are man-made. The South beach, which is the largest and nicest (white sand) beach, faces the bay which is basically a big noisy marina… The view consists of jet skis, boats, and cruise ships. The North beach which is not as nice (yellow sand and pebbles) and smaller has a better view and is quieter but I still found it to be noisy. There are other better beaches off-resort but you’ll have to pay for a cab and entry… We didn’t go to these. And what’s the deal with people who ‘reserve’ lounging chairs at 7AM and don’t vacate them the whole day, come on people, let’s share!

6. Ganga: The ganga was pretty good but not as good as what you can get in Canada. DON’T buy it at the airport, it’s garbage. Buy it in town, it’s not hard to find, people will come right up to you and offer (well to guys, not to girls so much). Everyone has it for sale, the trick is getting the good stuff… The hash was potent! I’m not a big fan of hash to start off with but the hash (not the Jamaican gum) gave me the spins. So much so that I nearly fell in the shower twice after smoking a joint; my friend actually did fall in the shower. Very few other people on the resort smoked up. The gazebo is a great place to smoke if no one else is around; otherwise smoke on your balcony. DON’T leave your product lying around in your room, the staff will tell you to hide it. Marijuana is ILLEGAL so be discrete.

7. Shops: A word of advice, bring US currency for on-resort tipping and JA currency for shopping in town as you generally get better deals on food and merchandise in JA dollars. Also, BARGAIN; if they make you a price, offer them half. If they don’t accept right away, walk away and they’ll likely change their minds. There are several open-air markets that sell souvenirs; I strongly recommend to the fenced-in one on the main road just outside the resort which is a ‘no-pressure sales’ market. You will get harassed at the other markets and the merchandise is lower quality.

8. Excursions: The excursions offered by the resort were very expensive (US$60 or more per person). We opted to bargain with the vendors in town and got much better deals on everything (at your own risk, people are very poor so watch your wallet). You MUST go to Dunn's River Falls either with a tour group or by cab (the latter was much cheaper $6/person for a cab and $20/person for park entry). The Bob Marley compound was okay. NOthing too exciting to see there but I'm still glad we went. Instead of a tour we bargained with Don Juan a local hustler on the beach. We gave him $40 the day before to buy beer and water which he brought in a cooler with ice (you can drink in cars there) for the ride. He charged us $25 each for the ride and it cost $20 each to enter the Bob Marley compound. He also took us to visit a marijuana field but I really don't recommend it; we feared for our lives.

 Sunset Grand

Overall we enjoyed our vacation and we just can't say enough about the staff working at this property. They were so accommodating, and a delight to speak with. Rooms are a 3.5 Star as far as amenities go and the beds are a bit hard so for you back sufferers, take some extra padding... Special thanks to Veronica Palmer who waitresses the early morning and lunch shift. Veronica is an outstanding gal and her service is the best we have had in a very long time.

 Jan 2012

Hotel in need of repairs which they are working towards, lots of burnt out light bulbs which should be an easy fix but never done- at one point no lights in the elevator and then later they put one bulb in only!!Bathrooms flooded for days with no fix in lounge areas.Fridges in some rooms but no water or beverages! For the cost have stayed at much nicer hotels.Lots of people being bit by jellyfish and wasps so not so great that way. Overall just average stay!

Family Vacation at Sunset Jamaica Grande

Ocho Rios is a great area for a family vacation because of the numerous activities in the area. We loved Dunn River Falls (cheaper to go independently rather than with a tour group) and horseback riding, as well as a night out at Margaritaville. Rooms at the hotel are ordinary but we didn't go to Jamaica to spend time in the rooms and the public areas (lobby, restaurants, pools) more than make up for it. The buffet food had a nice selection, particularly the Jamaican food, and all three sit-down restaurants were 5-star quality and service. Beaches are sandy but too few waves for us; however, there are lots of colourful fish to be seen while snorkelling along the rocky area.

Service good - quality lacking- not 4 star

The buildings are old and tired. Supposed renovation was not evident. Noise from wind and from entertainment are factors to consider. Staff are very good and the food and drink are good and varied.

Beach is nice sand and areas are kept clean.

 Deffinatly not what we expected!!

This hotel was rated a four star by some one who odviously has never stayed at a true four star hotel/resort. The food was sub par and the menu prepared was pretty much the exact same the whole week we were there. The hotel rooms are not as clean as you would expect from a 4 star esablishment. It is very understaffed and you should expect to be waiting in a line for just about everything.

 Great times at the Sunset

My Wife and I went to the Sunset Jamaica in Ocho from Jan 12th - 19th and had a great time. The place I would call more of a 3-3.5 star but for the price it was great value. The staff was amazing, the food was great as were the drinks. The place could use a bit of up keep but nothing to fret over.

 We enjoyed our vacation

I was almost at the the front of line for Check-In and I found it slow and felt bad for all the rest of the people behind me. Our rooms were on the 7th floor, North Tower overlooking the back of hotel and the sea. The rooms were clean and the beds were comfortable. The resort and grounds were nice and clean. The beach kinda small, but worked. The al a carte restaurants were very good but small portions. The buffet always had enough food, something for everyone. They did have one ice cream machine next to the Grill where you could just get hamburgers, grillcheese and fries but it would have been nice to have one at the main buffet where you could make your own sundaes as I didn't really care for some desserts. The buffet would always have a nice band or singers during dinner, nice touch. The entertainment shows started late most of time so I only watched like 2 shows as we were tired from waking up early in the morning. I enjoyed my vacation but I would only go back if I got a great deal.

 Meeeeehhhh

If your looking for a nice white sandy beach this isn't the place to go to.

If you love eating chicken for 7 days for lunch and dinner you'll love this place.

Checking in took forever.

This is not a 4 star hotel more like 2.5

If you can get this trip for 700$ then do it but dont pay more than that, its not worth it.
