I enjoyed my stay very much! The staff was friendly, the variety of restaurants was great, My favorite restaurants were the Japanese and Italian, the buffet was great as well I used it for breakfast. There was a lack of condiments but that didn't bother me however I would bring pepper next time and Bailys for your coffee. I found the beds fairly comfortable I'd rate them 7 out of 10. I highly suggest bringing your own hairdryer if you use one as the hairdryers there are stuck on the wall and the cord is short, didn't like that but I managed, very minor. However the plug one morning wouldn't stay in the socket and my front door batteries went dead and I couldn't get in to my suite however the repairman came and fixed that quite promptly. I am a gin drinker and I had to upgrade my room to get gin, which I did found annoying but that suite had 2 floors 2 balcony's with a later 2pm checkout (which I was thankful for as I golfed the morning I was leaving) it was 350 USD for 6 nights. The resort has free golf but you do have to pay for the cart which is 44 CAD and I rented golf clubs which were 33 CAD (I loved the Golf club which are Taylormade) the course is awesome too!! The beach was incredibly beautiful as is the whole resort. I would definitely go back and plan on it. The WI_FI connection was sketching and iPhones struggle there I have a Samsung and it was ok mostly. The process of going home in the airport was a 1 out of 10 I stood inline 3 straight hours, the first lineup was to get you boarding pass, the next lineup was for passport and that Visa (save that Visa you need it to come home) the next lineup was on the tarmac to board, it took all of the time to the minute to go home after you are dropped off at the airport, absolutely horrible. I suggest pay for priority status for the plane you board first then they start with the back of the plane seats and up to the front. I also suggest taking a taxi yourself to get there earlier to get through faster. It really was horrible standing in the heat and humidity for 3 hours solid!

Dissapointing
We are frequent travellers all over the Caribbean and of course we visited on many occasions in different provinces of beautiful Cuba. 13 times. We very recently stayed at the SOL Varadero Beach resort for 14 days (February 2 thru February 16 2023). We were totally disappointed on the food and bar services, in fact, this has been the worse experience in our past 22 years of travelling. Judging from other guests present during our stay the consensus was that the food selection was bad and extremely repetitive. Pretty much the same for lunch and dinner. Unless your are vegan and thriving on bean salads and cabbage with unsuspected ingredients you would find yourself walking around the buffet with a near empty plate. The hot dishes were most of the time served cold and other items such as cold cuts and cheeses served above safe temperature. We have never seen a resort that does not serve fish and seafood at the buffet at least occasionally but even worse, no pasta bar. So in short we were doomed to eat eggplant and pumpkins in countless dishes as well as chicken or pork both often served dried up from being too long on appliances or grill)for the full 14 days of our vacation. The a la carte restaurants with no exeptions are a joke!!! Beside never running out of rums, the bar selection was also the worse we have seen with many shortages of different types of popular alcohols, bars are limited to just a few types of mixed drinks using mixers that does not come close to the cocktail recipe. Even the mojitos were off. We were disappointed, so were countless of other guests and we all felt the same, we will never go back to this resort and we will also share our bad experience with as many people as we can. They run a business, they should be more concerned about the customer's satisfaction and pay attention to details. I feel sorry for the staff. Walking on the Varadero beach I could exchange with guests from other resorts and was not surprised to here that we were the unlucky ones. It does indicate that the Sol Varadero Beach was the only resort cheaping out on the supplies, it is shameful to think that they might be doing this to save money, the resort rate was not the cheapest on the strip but we chose it nonetheless, lesson learned.

CUBA TIME
We stayed at the Valentin Veradero Patriarca for 12 nights. The weather was fantastic! The food was not fancy but a good assortment of it. The chef even cooked 4 large turkeys for us Canadians. One evening they even made a PAIEA for dinner. The flavour was amazing from the variety of seafood in it. One afternoon while on our deck they decided to drive around the resort with a vehicle shooting out of 4 exhausts some sort of pesticides to curb the what we call little no see ems. We were bitten as were others at the resort. I had welts and severe itching to the point of bleeding. I went to the resort doctor to see if there was a cream or medication that could alleviate the problem but were told we would need to pay $225 up front and then get the money back from our insurance. We ended up going to a pharmacy to buy some hydrocortisone cream to help with the itching. I am still swollen with cellulitis from the reaction to the bites. The rooms had broken lamps, poorly lit rooms, restricted towels, cable and refreshments in the fridge instead of what was advertised. We were at the same resort about 9 years ago when it was only 2 years old and things were far superior and worth the money we paid. The staff were very hospital and tried to do their best with what they were given. The entertainment in the evenings was quite good. The snack shack ---the hostess hardly smiled and the fries were so over cooked that there was no potatoe left inside of the fry. The pools were fairly clean and the pool staff were very accomadating. There is definitely room for improvement and updating of services. We wont be returning there.

Relaxing Week
We just had a wonderful week at Melia Las Antillas. We usually spend most of out time at the beach and it and the pool were all we could ask for. They were clean and there was never a shortage of chairs or service at either location. Service in general at this location, housekeeping, food and bartending, were all very good. The beach bar staff, Colon, Raul and Jorge made us smile everyday. We were also especially pleased with Greter, Ibeisi and Naidelys in Fifth Floor Concierge who went out of their way to make us comfortable. Naidelys was especially helpful on one occasion when my husband, who is a type one diabetic, found himself with a low blood sugar early in the morning. We always travel with the required candy etc. but weren't sure we would have enough to get us to breakfast and she delivered juice and sweets to our room. Our room was very comfortable and kept very clean by housekeeping. The bed was the most comfortable we've had in all of our visits to Cuba and for the first time ever, I didn't use the extra pillowcases I brought from home as the pillows smelled fresh and clean as opposed to musty and damp. As is the case at most resorts in Cuba right now, there were some inconsistencies with what was available for food and drinks. On one night no white wine in the buffet, another no pina colada at the pool or gin in the lobby. These situations were usually temporary and we were always able to find something else to our liking to eat and drink. We are both 50 years old and found this resort to have the perfect mix of entertainment/activities and quiet. We were especially impressed with the Cuban Day entertainment and food and the evening cocktail party for Canadians. They both felt like nice little extras and were well done. We recommend this resort and will definitely hope to be lucky enough to return.
