Worth it?
I visited the Catalonia Royal La Romana the end of May, 2023. This wasn't my first Catalonia Royal stay, since I stayed at the Catalonia Royal Bavaro a few years ago, so I had some ideas of what to expect, I thought. I'll break this down into pros and cons from a Canadian traveller perspective. Pros - the resort itself is beautiful and meticulously maintained. There were workers on hands and knees all day pulling weeds and trimming grass - The beach is clean, sand is perfect and the water the clearest and cleanest I've seen in the DR with no kelp - rooms are fairly spacious compared to other places, but we did pay for a swim-up room, so not sure what the base rooms are like - check-in and out was nice and easy with a welcome cocktail - the transfer to and from the airport was included in our package and was on time - access to the larger, family oriented Catalonia Bayahibe next door, which I used a lot for the buffet and a couple of restaurants - no obnoxious vendors on the beach. There is a small flea market/shopping centre down on the beach and vendors walked back and forth all day, but if you were in the beach chairs, they wouldn't even speak to you. - there was always enough chairs to sit at the beach or the pool and not too many did the towel reservation thing in the early morning - wi-fi seemed good throughout the resort Cons - not a lot of other Canadian visitors and not many workers there speak English, which made it difficult getting things we needed or wanted at the restaurant, bars or stores or from cleaning staff - the Royal has 4 or 5 a la carte restaurants, but only has a breakfast buffet usually, except 2 days a week, they have a dinner buffet, but they are small and not much selection. A la carte are fairly quick though, at least the couple times I ate there. If you are a picky eater, you might struggle to find something you want - room service is available 24/7, but choices consist of mainly a hamburger or fried chicken, not much else and if you don't speak Spanish, you can't order anything else basically - the resort uses an app for all menus in restaurants and to actually book the restaurants, which makes the language gap easier, but you always need a phone with a barcode scanner app to order or book anything. Great idea, but I don't want to go on vacation and have to rely on my phone for anything, especially to get something to eat - the biggest con to me was the room options, pricing and advertising. If you book, you'll see a selection of room choices, but none of the photos or information is correct, not even on their own website. I ended up paying way too much for a swim-up room which appeared to be one thing on the website, but turned out to not be close to that at all. I was very disappointed, since I could have went to a MUCH better resort for what I paid. This point alone is enough to keep from re-booking this resort again. - we had a mouse in our room for two nights, but the resort seemed totally shocked there was one there and they caught it quickly. It is possible it came in with someones luggage though. No big deal and they acted quicklly to rectify - the Exclusive Travelers Club will try and call you and get you to go to the lobby under the guise of a “welcome package”, but it ends up being a sales pitch for an expensive time share type membership…don't fall for it. I learned this from my last visit in Bavaro, so I didn't even answer the phone - the room cleaning was great for half the trip, but a staff change half way through saw it become non-existent essentially. We were supposed to have fresh beach towels delivered every evening, and the first few days we did, even if it wasn't until 9 or 9:30 pm. The last few days, nothing. - the food selections weren't great, but what they did have was tasty. I found myself eating 99% of the time on the family side (Catalonia Bayahibe) which had a larger buffet and was open more frequently for breakfast, lunch and supper/dinner - the beach is beautiful, but the layout of the resort means it's a little hike to get there from one end of the resort to the other. They do have a golf cart that takes people back and forth every 15 mins though - most staff weren't pleasant at all, with a few exceptions. I brought a couple hundred dollars for tips and used very little, because I rarely saw anyone going the extra mile to provide good service. The only exception was the room cleaning staff the first few days, which I tipped generously. Seems no one else really cared if you were happy or not there and could care less about a tip, which seemed totally different than it was a few years ago. I don't tip to receive good service, I tip to reward it and that's how it should be. I just saw very few instances to tip.

Hotel Review - Punta Cana
Hi, the resort was ok but not worth the price. We've travelled all over the world on cruises and land tours and stayed at many all inclusives... the price paid was more than all other trips. Considering what is offered it was not worth it. For example, the resort doesn't have many activities - not even a ping pong table for rainy days, only 2 pool tables inside the small sports bar. The nightly shows were lame with the same music every night and everything shut down at 11pm sharp in the show area. No water activities even though there's a "water sports" hut on the beach. Not enough beach loungers as everyone - if you don't go down at 7am you're out of luck for a lounger beach or pool side. Not a lush property as far as gardens. The food, esp the buffet, was ok and not many choices for a la carte - not even a Japanese restaurant. My meal at the Italian restaurant was supposed to be Chicken Florentine with spinach - seemed I got a frozen, breaded chicken cutlet with NO spinach and NO wine sauce... was awful. The rooms were very plain and had no solid bathroom door, just a glass door to toilet and shower - very bizarre. Rooms need a refresh, the AC barely cooled the room, no hot water on last day of stay, nowhere to hang towels and toiletry bags, just not worth the money. We've stayed at really nice hotels for MUCH less money... overall, a very boring resort. Unless you're in your 20-30s and only care about drinking all day then we would not recommend this resort.

Disappointed
I am rather upset with the resort. While the physical landscaping of the property and the beach were lovely, everything else falls short of satisfaction. The front desk staff was slow and not focused on any of the clients, and would often carry conversation and jokes with other staff. It took 30 minutes to register, and we were told to return 30 minutes later only to go through the process again because we arrived prior to 3pm. The room itself was dated, but it would have been ok if it had been properly cleaned (with cleaning products). We noticed stains, dirt, and dust for days until we simply got tired of seeing it and decided to clean it ourselves. There were days that we went without towels because the staff didn't replace them. Don't expect the mini bar to be filled, even after tipping for the bar and the room, nothing changed. The food is the generic buffet, and was to be expected. I found it odd that nothing was hot though. Despite being in a warming station, everything was just slightly warm. The saving grace was the food made to order. Omelettes and fresh pasta were great. All of the food was over salted or without flavour. The drinks were very, very, very watered down. We took the advice of staff members and picked up our own bottles in the duty free. Considering we paid for an all inclusive which consisted of food and drinks, it is sad that we had to pay more to get a real drink. It was disappointing that despite tipping over and over for everything in hopes that there would be better service, there was no change. $500 in tips could have gone to better use. The entertainment was brutal. The night shows were just awful. To the point that people would have to leave the area, not finishing their drinks, just to avoid the noise that was supposed to be music. I wish we had a glowing review, but unfortunately there is nothing about this resort that I will ever recommend to anyone traveling. I pretty much gave up on this place when “Panda” of the entertainment staff began talking about “ fags and lesbians” out of nowhere and demanded I get a cup or two of beer from the pool bar for him. This was my first and only encounter with him.

Would not encourage people to come to resort!
Overall I am shocked at reading positive reviews! I just got home yesterday and I am very thankful for the group of girls that came as we made our own fun for my cousins Bachelorette. However this hotel was not a 5 star at most I would give it is a 2 star, I would label it a 3 star with me being extremely kind and nice. I assure you to not ever go to this resort! I also assured our travel agent and others to never send anyone to this resort. The staff were very rude! I approached the bar at night asking for water to be filled in my steel cooler cup after I was given it and tipped the man; he told me to not come back and waved his hand so I did not go to that bar again. I will say the lobby bar staff were amazing totally different experience. The food was horrible! I got the runs the whole trip. Now the worst situation was regarding our room or I should say our rooms. I had to switch my room three times; this all occurred in one day so you can imagine my frustration as I could not enjoy my last night especially in Punta Cana. The first our toilet broke twice; both times the toilet wouldn't flush. The first time the repairman fixed the toilet after we waited more than 3 hours for it to be fixed. The second time the repair man came and told us it could not be fixed after being in our room for I would say 2-3 hours and left the room. I was not going to stay in a room where the toilet was broken as I had the runs. So I told the girls to pack up and we went into the lobby looking for a new second room before it got to late and we were to tired. Now this was a situation getting a new room, I had to get my friend who spoke Spanish to assist as the front desk man could not help us without him or someone who spoke the language maybe since it was super late at night, i'm not sure if they only keep bilingual staff during day hours. This took at least an hour to get a new room, our second room. Once we got to the room, I started to notice bugs! I thought I killed them all so I finally went to hangout with the girls. Once I returned to the room I noticed the bugs multiplied like crazy. They were all over the walls, bed, table and washroom floor. I immediately told them let's get our luggage and go back to the lobby; this was around 12am, my spanish friend was sleeping so I tried google translate as we ran into a language barrier again. This worker kept us waiting in the lobby till at least 2:30am. By this time getting the room at 2:30am we all were exhausted. The girls went to bed but I needed to shower as I was so itchy from the bug bites which I have been told after going to the clinic today it is bed bugs along with mosquito bites all over my body. As I was taking a shower I noticed the maid did not clean the shower as hair was left on the wall. This was the worst vacation resort I have been to in my whole life! Our last night at 2:30am once we got our third room; I was told by the employee using google translate I was needing to come to the lobby in the morning to speak with the manager who will apologize and do something to fix this experience for myself. I came twice to the lobby and waited for the manager till the moment I hopped onto the cart to take us to the bus to leave to come to Canada but nothing happened... No manager and no conversation. TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE! The wifi is terrible at the resort as well it is very choppy and cuts in and out all the time if your trying to post a photo to social media you find yourself posting the same photo 2 or more times. Now the room service is not existent, if you want drinks you need to get them before midnight or anything you want you have to come pick it up at the lobby front desk. We had so many issues trying to get water delivered to the front door of our room as there was not enough in the fridge. They only give you 3 small water bottles. A shocker was also being told you have access to all the resorts on property but when you try and go into another resort buffet you actually are unable to do so! Our travel agent has been amazing handling our concerns and issues we have been faced with during this trip! I would recommend using her again to book trips!

2022 Adventure Trip to Dominican Republic
clinic - scam---> they speak 80% Spanish, and use iphone to translate it in English. And then they send you bill to your room, and harass you at middle of night to pay the bills. There is no place to complain. Zero customer service. their Motto is: customer and clients who haas spent 6 to 8K dollars to come visit their resort, are always wrong and we can squeeze more money out of them. Towel Station ==> only 1 located at main pool -- which is 10 minutes walk to water park for kids. Very inconvenience. as it closes at 5 p.m. the one at.beach never seen it open either. Beautiful Lobby - but no garbage stations Arrival: at arrival on our first day, there was no on at reception. very confusing. the people at entrance sent us to right, and the other party to left. at right where it says express "check in" there was no one to receive. The people who were guided to go left, also joined us, saying the people at other side directed us here. All of us were confused till after sometime, someone finally shows up. ==> for couples it may be okay resort, but for people with kids, this place is no good. ==> everything is sold in U.S. dollars rather than in their local currency. items sold outside are so much cheaper than the hotel. ==> coconut is sold for $5 U.S by the pool. but outside it is less than a $1 U.S. ==> people at reception are not well trained, their information don't match from person to person. I have been to Dominican Republic before. first time was so amazing at another resort, there was no availability there, else i wouldn't have to this location.
